How Long Should I Practice?

So many of students over the past years have asked me how long they should practice. This is probably the most commonly asked question of all music students. The best answer to that question is, "It depends on what results you want to achieve".

I have prepared a chart below with intended goals and the practice time needed to achieve those goals.

Skill Goal Daily Practice Time
Occasional dabbling with no improvement Whenever you feel like it.
Show a slight improvement 1 hour
Show a measurable improvement 2 hours
Show rapid improvement 3 hours
Achieve semi-pro status 4 hours
Rapid advancement toward professional status 5 hours
Maintain professional sound quality 6 hours
Achieve broadcast quality 7 hours
Become a full-time musician 8 hours

It is not enough to just practice the amount of time shown in the chart. If you are practicing bad habits, as often occurs with self-taught musicians, you will not be getting the most out of your practice session. Practicing the wrong thing will either delay your goals or do you more harm than good. It is important that you are taught the proper methods by a qualified teacher and apply the times in the chart to those methods to achieve the desired goals.
