Definition of "Motif"

A rhythmic group of notes and pitches used in creating a melodic phrase. One phrase or groove could consist of several motives. When motives are constructed, the first one is called the "A" motif, the second one the "B" motif, etc.

Some possible structures of motives to create grooves or musical phrasing would be AAAA, ABAA, AABB, ABAB, ABAC, ABCD.
